The role of the learning specialist is to provide students with academic support. Learning specialists will work closely with students, teachers, guidance counselors, and building administrators to create and foster a positive environment for student success.
Successful candidates will:

  •  Demonstrate excellent communication skills with the ability to build strong relationships with students, teachers, guidance counselors, parents and building administrators
  • Have strong content knowledge of elementary curriculum across all subject areas
  • Contribute to the development of systems and structures to improve teacher practice within the District
  •  Provide direction for the pedagogical delivery of the curriculum consistent with District initiatives and recognized Next Generation Learning Standards
  • Support students in understanding curriculum and assessment
  • Provide differentiated lessons to students based on their individual needs
  •  Administer benchmark assessments in order to identify student's strengths and weaknesses and help design a custom support plan based on student’s individual needs.
  • Empower teachers in the utilization of data to target and improve instruction on all levels
  •  Interpret the results of diagnosis to students, parents, teachers and other faculty
  • Help teachers in the classroom make use of information from diagnosis in their teaching.
  •  Demonstrate the ability to work with children of all ages who are dealing with various learning troubles
  •  Display highly effective communication skills geared to various age groups
  •  Four (4) years of classroom experience preferred.

Extended School Year (Anticipated Openings (ESY) 20262526 LCSD 197 R

Program Description:

Longwood will offer an Extended School Year (ESY) program for students who require continued educational programming or related services during the summer months. The six-week program will operate Monday through Friday from July 6th through August 14th at Longwood Junior High School. ESY is designed to support Special Education students with intensive needs who require a high level of individualized instruction and support in order to prevent significant regression over the summer. Eligibility for the ESY program is determined by the Committee on Special Education (CSE) during students’ annual review meetings.

Location: Longwood Junior High School
Program Required Days/Hours
Preparation: Maximum 20 hours
Days: Before June 26, 2026 and After August 14, 2026
Orientation: June 29, 2026 - 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. (3 hours)
Program Dates: July 6, 2026 - August 14, 2026 (Monday - Friday)
Hours: 8:15 a.m. - 2:15 p.m.
Responsibilities of Facilitators: Facilitator will be responsible for all aspects of the program to include but are not limited to:
• Implementing staff orientation
• Oversee all staff including teachers, TAs and related service providers
• Organize classroom sections and room assignments
• Parent contact
• Staff and student attendance
• Communicate with Coordinator
Qualifications of Facilitators: Applicants should be highly organized, professional and excellent communicators
Salary: MITA Contractual Rates

MITA Faculty
Location: Longwood Junior High School
Program Required Days/Hours: Orientation and Classroom Set Up: June 29. 2026 - 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Program Dates: July 6, 2026 - August 14, 2026 (Monday - Friday)
Hours: Full Day- 8:15 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. Half Day- 8:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.
Responsibilities of MITA Staff:
• Work with Special Education students with highly intensive needs to reduce regression of IEP goals
• Communicate with facilitators and parents
Qualifications of MITA Staff: NYS Certification Required
Salary: MITA Contractual Rates

CSEA Staff
Location: Longwood Junior High School
Program Required Days/Hours: Program Dates: July 6, 2026 - August 14, 2026 (Monday - Friday)
Hours: Full Day- 8:15 a.m. - 2:15 p.m. Half Day- 8:15 a.m. - 11:15 a.m.
Responsibilities of Aides
• Work with staff and students during the hours of the program to ensure a safe environment for all
• Assist and ensure safety during arrival and dismissal
• Assist in coordination and distribution of meals
• Provide toileting assistance if necessary
Salary: CSEA Contractual pay rate

Salary is based on contractual agreement.
